What are the main advantages of the cold heading process?

Time:2022-01-10

The cold heading process is one of the new pressure machining processes for less and less cutting metals. It is a processing method that utilizes the plastic deformation of metal under the action of external force, and redistributes and transfers the metal volume by means of a mold, thereby forming the required parts or blanks. The cold heading process is most suitable for the production of standard fasteners such as bolts, screws, nuts, rivets, pins, etc. The equipment commonly used in the cold heading process is a special cold heading machine. If the production volume is not too large, a crank press or a friction press can also be used instead. The following will give you a detailed introduction to the main advantages of the cold heading process.

1. Cold heading is carried out at room temperature. Cold heading can improve the mechanical properties of metal parts. The following table is a comparison of mechanical strength between cold heading bolts and machined bolts: it can be seen from the table that no matter what kind of bolts it is, the tensile strength after cold heading is about 10% higher than that of cutting, and some It can even be increased by 20%. This is because the metal fibers of the cold heading product are not cut, the internal structure of the metal is compacted, and the accompanying work hardening phenomenon exists, so the mechanical properties of the metal are improved.

2. The cold heading process can improve the utilization rate of materials. Taking cold heading bolts as an example, the material utilization rate of "recessed" hexagonal head bolts can reach more than 99%. In addition to the loss of the material head and tail, it achieves complete machining without cutting. If machining is used, the material utilization rate is only 40%. The material utilization rate of cold heading nuts can also reach about 80%, while the material utilization rate of cutting nuts is only 54%.

3. The cold heading process can greatly improve the productivity. For example, compared with the original cutting process, the productivity of cold heading nuts is increased by about 25 to 30 times.

4. Due to the use of a multi-station cold heading machine, each process can be processed simultaneously on one machine tool, thereby reducing equipment investment, reducing the production site occupied by equipment, and reducing the amount of semi-finished products between each process. Transportation, in particular, reduces the labor intensity of workers and improves labor conditions.

5. The cold heading process can improve the surface finish of the product and ensure the accuracy of the product. The general finish can reach V5, and the special requirements can reach V6. For mass production of bolts, nuts, etc., its accuracy can be fully guaranteed.

Because of its high productivity, good product quality, and greatly reducing material consumption, reducing production costs, and improving labor conditions, cold heading process is more and more widely used in machinery manufacturing, especially in the production of standard fasteners. The most representative products produced by multi-station cold heading machines are bolts, screws and nuts.
